Emergency Medical Service Nurse Practitioner
This post-graduate completion program addresses the growing need for advanced nurse practitioners within Emergency Medical Services (EMS). It equips students with the knowledge and skills to manage prehospital care, integrate evidence-based clinical practice, and assume leadership roles in EMS systems. Emphasis is placed on preparing nurse practitioners to deliver high-acuity care in dynamic field environments, support disaster response efforts, and advance EMS practice through research, innovation, and quality improvement initiatives.
The Emergency Medical Services Nurse Practitioner (EMSNP) subspecialty is an advanced option within the Emergency/Trauma Nurse Practitioner (ETNP) post-graduate completion program. It consists of both didactic and clinical coursework designed to prepare students for leadership and practice in prehospital emergency care.
The one didactic course (3 credit hours) provides a comprehensive overview of the modern evolution of EMS in the United States, emphasizing the integration of nurse practitioners in the provision and administration of prehospital care. Major areas of focus include EMS operations, clinical management, quality improvement, research, disaster management, and the advanced practice provider’s role within EMS systems.
The one clinical course consists of 180 supervised clinical hours (3 credit hours) in approved EMS environments, including residential and business properties, healthcare facilities, outdoor and inclement settings, and emergency vehicles. Students gain direct experience managing non-urgent, urgent, and critical conditions across acute and chronic care presentations in the prehospital setting.
Admissions Criteria:
Eligible candidates for the EMSNP post-graduate completion program must have successfully completed a post-graduate Emergency Nurse Practitioner (ENP) program and/or hold current national certification as an ENP through the American Academy of Nurse Practitioners Certification Board (AANPCB).
